The UGA Cannes Lions Advertising Study Abroad Program offers two academic courses centered on the famed Cannes Lions Advertising Festival, which takes place in the French coastal city of Cannes each June.
Through this program, students have an opportunity to expand their global perspective and participate in an international advertising and media event. The festival is arguably the most important advertising festival in the world, and it attracts advertising executives and practitioners from around the world. For one week each June, the festival at Cannes is home to the major players in the international advertising community.
Located on the Mediterranean in southern France, Cannes is a beautiful seaside resort community not far from Nice, Monte Carlo, and St. Tropez.

Program Description and Information
Program Description
The program's goal is to provide students in Advertising, Telecommunications, Film, and related fields with the opportunity to study at and participate in the world's most prestigious advertising festival. Students will encounter cutting-edge advertising and meet the men and women who create these ads. The course offers intellectual adventure and the opportunity to meet industry leaders from every continent -- real-life experiences unavailable in traditional classroom settings.
The program offers two courses. See the attached syllabi. Students are required to take both courses, for a total of six UGA credit hours.
Program Requirements:
There is no minimum GPA, but holding good standing (not being on probation) at an accredited university is necessary. Minimum age is 18.
Course Load:
STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO REGISTER FOR BOTH COURSES - ADPR5990 and TELE5990.
Practical Information:
Housing and Meals:
Students will be housed in apartments in Juan-les-Pins, a small seaside community a few miles east of Cannes. Usually, two students share a studio apartment with kitchenette in a French residential hotel. A security deposit of $100 is required.
Students are given the equivalent of US$20 per day, Monday-Friday, to cover the cost of meals. Students pay for their own meals on weekends.
How to get to Cannes:
Delta, Air France and other airlines offer flights to Nice through a connection in New York, Paris, or another major European city. From Nice Airport students can take a bus, taxi or train for the half hour ride to Juan-les-Pins.
Cellular Telephones:
Each student will be loaned a European cellular telephone for use during the program. These phones will receive calls free of charge, and text messages can be sent and received very inexpensively. In order to make telephone calls, students have to purchase phone cards and enter credit into the phones. Note that these phones should be used for making local calls only; the cost of making international calls is high. However, the phones can receive international calls free of charge. Phones must be returned on the last day of the program, along with the charger and instruction booklet. A security deposit of $100 is required.
Program Costs:
The cost of the program EXCLUDES TUITION AND TECHNOLOGY FEE, both of which need to be paid separately and directly to the UGA Bursar’s Office. Tuition varies depending on a student’s year in school. Last year, tuition costs ranged from $1218 to $1416 for students taking both courses, half of that amount for students taking only one course. There will probably be a slight increase this year. Note that HOPE does cover a portion of the tuition, if you qualify for the HOPE Scholarship. Please check with the Bursar’s Office to determine your specific tuition cost. Students must enroll in both courses.
The cost of the program for in-state students is $3,850 and $4,100 for students who are neither in the University of Georgia System nor residents of Georgia.
The program cost includes housing, Cannes Lions Badge, a food allowance Monday-Friday, and medical insurance. Not included is your airfare as well as rail and bus costs between Nice, Juan-les-Pins and Cannes, personal purchases, weekend food costs, and the security deposit for lodging and cell phone. Please be prepared to cover these costs, including phone cards, which can add up if you are not careful.
These program costs will also be paid directly to the Bursar’s Office in accordance with a UGA STUDY ABROAD PAYMENT INFORMATION agreement that all applicants are required to sign. That agreement can be found at: UGA Study Abroad Payment Information.
Financial aid
HOPE scholarship applies to tuition for UGA students. Note that changes in the HOPE scholarship mean that HOPE no longer covers 100% of tuition. Check with the University of Georgia Financial Aid Office for details on financial aid. (HOPE Scholarship money is not available until 10 days before the start of each term.) The Georgia State Board of Regents also offers some scholarships for Study Abroad Programs; to apply, visit the website at: www.uga.edu/oie, download the form and submit. Students from other universities may check with their home institutions for similar financial aid opportunities. It is each student's responsibility to go to your Financial Aid Office and notify them that you are doing the Cannes Study Abroad Program. This enables your Financial Aid Office to then start the paperwork necessary for your scholarships and/or financial aid to be transferred to the University of Georgia.

Introduction
The Cannes Lions website (www.canneslions.com) defines the festival thusly: "The Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival is the world's only truly global meeting place for professionals in the communications industry who want to keep ahead of the curve. During seven days in June, thousands of delegates from 90 countries gather in Cannes to listen to speakers such as Sir Martin Sorrell, Bob Greenberg, Kofi Annan, Steve Ballmer, Biz Stone, Maurice L'vy, Bob Geldof, Mark Tutssel, Tham Khai Meng and hundreds of others, whilst around 250 jury members judge over 22,000 pieces of the most creative advertising from across the world. All the entries are available to view for delegates in exhibitions, kiosks and in screenings.
The networking and learning opportunity of the year, Cannes Lions is the must-attend event for any creative professional wishing to stay ahead with the innovations in their field."
Course Description
Commercial production techniques are changing dramatically, given the digital revolution and the economic downturn. Creators of television, radio and web commercials find themselves redefining what a commercial is and how to produce them. New narrative and aesthetic structures, commercial lengths and placements, and concepts of branding, among other variables, are questioning and in some cases replacing traditional advertising strategies. This revolution is taking place internationally, with much of the most innovative work occurring outside of the United States.
In this course, students will study, critique and produce commercials in and for the digital age, based upon what they see and learn at the Cannes Lions Festival.
During the first week of the three-week program, students will participate in seminars and workshops on commercial production techniques. The second week of the program is the festival itself. Students will attend the Festival seminars, workshops, lectures, screenings, and awards ceremonies. They will critique what they see and hear. And during the final week of the program, students, working in small groups, will write and produce digital commercials.
Assignments
During the festival students will attend a minimum of four workshops, four keynote addresses, and two award ceremonies. Students will critique at least one of those events each day of the festival. For the term project, students will write and produce a commercial campaign, based on what they have learned during the festival. Each small group will present its project to the entire class.
Attendance
Attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to participate in class discussions.
Grading
The final grade is based on the aggregate grades of assignments, participation in festival workshops and events, and participation during class discussion.
